A scarce second edition of 1826.In 1824, James MacCullogh (Scottish geologist known for his pioneering texts on geology and for producing the first geological maps of Scotland) wrote four tomes discussing the Highlands and Western isles of Scotland in a series of letters addressed to Walter Scott. In the work, he represents the highlanders as barbarous, indolent, dishonest, and inhospitable. Those tomes were criticised by the public and here by Browne, who defines them as 'arrogant pretensions', inaccurate, prejudiced, and a mere attempt to gain subscribers. Browne's work opens with an overview of recent works on the highlands and highlanders and continues discussing the geology, economy, and other information on the land. Half title discarded as usual with the leather binding . CONDITION In a half calf binding over marbled boards. Externally very smart with only minor shelf wear and a minor rubbing to the leather. Inscribed by a previous owner to the verso of the blank page frontispiece. Lacking the half title. Internally, firmly bound. With a minor faint spotting to the edges, affecting only the very occasional page, which are otherwise generally bright and clean.
