All boards are detached from bindings with the exception of the rear boards of volume I and volume II, which are still attached via fragile cording. Wear and chipping to boards. Tips are bumped with exposed boards. Chipping and cracking to spines. Titles originally in gilt on spines, but gilt remains only on volume I. Gilt dentelles on first, fourth, fifth, and sixth compartments, but first and sixth compartments are lacking on volume I. Marbling to endpapers and fore edges. Bookplate for John Chipman Gray on front pastedowns. Toning and age-staining to textblocks, but overall generally clean and readable. No known marginalia. Bindings intact. He wrote a monumental history of Rome and the Roman people, titled Ab Urbe Condita, “From the Founding of the City”, covering the period from the earliest legends of Rome before the traditional founding in 753 BC through the reign of Augustus in Livy’s own lifetime. He was on good terms with members of the Julio-Claudian dynasty and was a friend of Augustus, whose young grandnephew, the future emperor Claudius, he encouraged to take up the writing of history.
