Description: This is a folky painting of someone's favorite St. Bernard dog, circa 1870's or 1880's. Measuring 21" by 16" on the original very old stretchers and 12 1/2" by 12 1/2" (and 17 1/2" by 17 1/2" as framed), the painting is a sweet and classic rendition of a treasured pet of the Victorian era. Vintage dog paintings are very popular and collectable. This one has evidence of its great age, with a darkened surface, no varnish, soil/blanching, very slight stretcher bar show-through at top, and some flaking from past moisture exposure (as seen on reverse), especially at bottom left as shown. These issues notwithstanding, the piece is very appealing.
