Description: Antoine Louis Barye (1796-1875); Etude de Tigre [Resting Tiger], lithograph, printed by Nicholas-Louis Delaunois (fl. 1830-1840); 1832. First state of three (Delteil, 2.1 - a third state was printed by Beartauts) which appeared in the journal L'ARTISTE, 4th quarter, 1832. Beautifully mounted with a white/gold double mat in an antique hand carved wooden frame with gilt insert. Excellent condition; a bright sheet with no foxing and just the slightest toning. Rare in this state. (Note Barye's name is misspelled with two "r"s). The British Museum notes the image is printed on china paper, and the lettering above and below image are "on stone". Barye - goldsmith, metal engraver, painter, bronze sculptor - will forever be known as the 19th C master of the bronze wild cat. Founder of the Modern Animaliere Movement, he was called by a noted critic "the Michelangelo of the menagerie". A lovely first impression of this iconic image.
