Erbe had previously served as the AttorneyGeneral of Iowa, from 1957 to 1961. Erbe was an infantry officer in the U.S. Army from 1941 to 1943. He then transferred to the U.S. Army Air Corps, and spent the rest of World War II as a pilot. The autograph is on a sheet of Erbe's stationery as the Governor of Iowa, with his name printed near the top left corner.
