The site was located on Willis Avenue in the Town of Geddes (Onondaga County), New York. The former manufacturing buildings have been demolished. The site was used by Allied Chemical as a chemical manufacturing plant until 1977. Surrounding land uses include industrial. Interstate I690 is located immediately to the north of the site. The community had known for years that Allied's antiquated plant on Lake Onondaga was in economic trouble, but the actual announcement, made last week, still came as a shock to many of the 400,000 people in and around Syracuse and the village of Solvay, N.Y., where the plant is located. The plant's shutdown means the loss of a $46 million annual payroll, more than $3.4 million in local taxes and more than $150,000 a year in charitable contributions by the company and its employees. Considered Worst Blow in Years The decision to pull out was considered the worst blow to the Syracuse economy since the General Electric Company relocated several thousand workers from here in the early 1970's.
