Description: Here is a genuine, rare, absolutely gorgeous condition, pocket Season schedule for the 1971 American Basketball Association (ABA) Champion Utah Stars. This is the schedule for the year the Stars were defending their title. It is made of shiny, high-quality paper. I see nothing wrong with it, no smudges, stains, rips, bent corners, writing, ... anything! It looks never touched, but I know I have touched it extremely lightly to take the photos, so it must be as close to mint as possible. The front cover says 1971 ABA Champions Utah Stars 1972-73 Schedule. The back is an ad for Vitamin C from McKesson Robbins Drug Company. Also, one page gives the ticket prices ($2 to $5) and information about the Salt Palace. The other 3 "pages" are the actual schedule. The American Basketball Association, with its red-white-and-blue basketball and up-tempo style of play, succumbed as a league at the end of November 1975. Though they possessed some of the best stars of the game, the ABA was never able to secure a national television contract. Not to be confused with the current minor league American Basketball Association or the minor-league team by the name Utah Stars. The Utah Stars won the ABA title once, in 1971. They beat the Indiana Pacers to advance to the finals, then beat the Kentucky Colonels in a sold-out Game 7 in Salt Lake City. That was following a 1970 move from Los Angeles where they were the Los Angeles Stars. The ABA did much to improve the game. It was more wide-open than the traditional NBA game. The ABA was the first league to implement the 3-point shot. The ABA players were the ones to "invent" and use the "Alley-Oop". The Utah Stars, under coach Bill Sharman, were the first pro basketball team to use a pre-game shoot-around. Also, in the ABA, players did not foul out, regardless of the number of the fouls they committed (they could be ejected, though). The ABA also started the Slam-Dunk contests at All-Star games. The ABA was not at the talent level of the NBA when it was first formed in 1967. It never did draw the numbers of fans as the NBA (no tv network would give it a contract). The ABA and the NBA played "exhibition" games. The NBA won the vast majority at first, but by the end, the ABA was actually winning the majority of games. (total final count ABA 79 wins NBA 76 wins). The ABA went 16-7 in 1974 and 31-17 in 1975. Bad blood between the two leagues was evident in the "exhibition" games. I remember one extremely physical game between the NBA Boston Celtics and the ABA New York Nets, led by Rick Barry. After a ton of fouls and some ejections, the Nets won 116-115 as Havlicek missed 2 shots in the final seconds. After the game, Red Auerbach claimed the Celtics "weren't really trying", in spite of the fact that all their starters played every minute of the fourth quarter. The ABA had some players who became stars in the NBA when the ABA folded in 1976. Dr. "J" Julius Erving, Rick Barry, Billy Cunningham, George McGinnis, Mel Daniels, Dan Issel, Artis Gilmore, and George "Ice Man" Gervin were among those. On the Utah Stars team, was Moses Malone, Zelmo Beaty, Willie Wise and Ron Boone. Without a television national contract, the ABA folded in 1976, with 4 teams: the New York (now Brooklyn) Nets, Indiana Pacers, San Antonio Spurs, and Denver Nuggets (formerly Denver Rockets until 1974) joining the NBA.
