It is unquestionable that in the opinion of many people who lived during the first centuries after his death Nero was almost a celestial figure, a friend of the poor, an enemy of the stiff-necked rich, an Emperor who had also been a great artist, and who had traveled through his dominions singing to his people with a voice the like of which would never be heard again.” So says Weigall. In these constantly interesting pages he does a grand job in proving that this particular devil was not half so black as he was painted. Filled with startling accounts of the murders, incest, rapine and sexual abnormalities of the day, the book at times fairly takes away one’s breath, but Weigall, although he makes no attempt to conceal facts, never gives offense. The following is typical: “This young woman ...was soon involved in amorous intrigues, in which respect she vied with the young Empress herself, who had quickly reverted from the emotions of recent motherhood to those to which motherhood is the not un¬ common sequel.” Such felicitous phrasing is to be found on every page. The book is a brilliant account of a lustful period.
