Besides this manual he was also the author of Science and Art Drawing as well as the Complete Geometrical Course. He was also an instructor in drawing to the Royal Naval cadets in H.M.S. Britannia. Title page reads: Complete Perspective Course – Comprising The Elementary and Advanced Stages of Perspective – The Projection of Shadows and Reflections With Exercises in Theory and Practice – Also the Practical Application of Perspective by J. Humphrey Spanton – Published by Macmillan and Co., London 1900 – First Edition 1898 – Reprinted 1900. The title page notes this manual is designed to meet the requirements of examinations in the science and art department of various institutions of higher learning including Oxford and Cambridge, it also notes it is of service for the use by architects, engineers, artists and art students.It would also be a useful tool for cartoonists. There are 16 illustrated chapters. Some of the subjects include: Circles in Parallel Planes; Gothic Arches and Roofs; Polygons in Different Positions; Angular Perspective; Vanishing Lines; Curves and Scrolls; Traces of Planes; Solids in Complex Positions; Sciography or the Projection of Shadows; Photographic Perspective; Aerial Perspective; Reflection; Perspective Hints for Artists; and Special Problems to name only a few. There are exercises for practice. There are illustrations and diagrams throughout. This 282 page, approximately 9 by 5 ½ inch hardcover is in fairly good condition. The pages are clear and the text binding is solid. Someone did remove the inside front and back endpapers. The navy blue cloth cover with gilt spine title has a bit of wear along the edges.
