Vintage hardcover book with dust jacket from “The Illustrated Modern Library.” With an Introduction by Henry Steele Commager and Illustrations by Thomas Hart Benton. Published by Random House, Inc. 264 pages (followed by a one-page autobiographical note about the artist, Thomas Hart Benton). The copyright date on the book is 1944. I couldn’t find a publication date, but according to a Modern Library Collectors web site, this version of the dust jacket was in use between 1940 and 1970. Based on the style of the book and rear dust-jacket panel, I suspect this copy was issued sometime during the first half of that range. This hardcover book is in Very-Good condition with a square, tight spine and clean, unmarked pages. The blue cloth-covered boards show typical wear, rubbing, and bumping at the spine ends, along with SLIGHT fraying of the cloth at the top of the spine. There are no loose, torn, or missing pages, and no writing, marking, or underlining anywhere in the book. The price-clipped dust jacket is in Good-to-Very-Good condition with moderate wear and chipping at the spine ends and minor wear at the corners of the jacket. Clear tape has been applied to the inside of the jacket to reinforce the spine ends, but there is NO tape on the outside of the jacket. There is a list of 367 Modern Library titles on the inside of the jacket, which shows age-related discoloration along the jacket creases and spine. The dust jacket is now covered in Mylar although all photos except the last one were taken without it. Please see the photos for additional details and write with any questions.
